Our Journey


Train Station is a health and fitness initiative, aiming to provide high quality fitness instruction that is accessible to all members of the community.

WE exist TO INSPIRE HEALTHIER AND MORE ACTIVE COMMUNITIES.

It is our aim that our sessions will become the catalyst for positive change and healthier members of the community.

Train Station started after identifying a need to engage with young men who found themselves hanging around on the estates in Elephant and Castle (London), after the closures and reduction of funding for youth provisions in the area. Initially called the Men's fitness session, we aimed to surround younger men with positive male role models within the session, allowing the different generations to train together and learn from one another.

Founder Andrew Mongi recalls a time where "we had absolutely no funds and could only operate due to the generosity of the Pastor at NTCG St. Jude's, who allowed us to use the hall for free. I remember that in our very first session we had 7 young men and an equipment list that consisted of 6 yoga mats...and that was it."

In 2014, after consultation with our members, we decided to call the programme 'Train Station'. The sessions continued to grow organically and eventually we started a female fitness session. The success of these two sessions and the demand for more days to train per week led us to mixing the session and we now have two sessions running per week that are open to anyone aged 16+.

In June 2017, we became a Community Interest Company and our latest venture sees us working with Active Communities Network - delivering fitness activities to an under 16's age group in Southwark and Lambeth.

Total health is more than just training the body. Socialising and forming strong community relationships is essential to our programme and so we make sure it is factored in to the start of the session. We then get into a warm-up, followed by a fitness circuit and then ending on either a team or individual challenge.

At Train Station, we do not use 'reps' as a method of training. Instead, all our activity is time-based, which means we can have members of all levels training and achieving together within the same session.

We believe that people are more likely to reach their fitness goals much quicker if they workout as part of a team.
